Honoring our elders by celebrating, empowering and serving older adults

Serving the Kansas City community for more than 50 years, we are a nonprofit dedicated to supporting older adults. We celebrate their contributions and provide support and companionship to increase social activity, reduce food insecurity, and build lasting relationships. Everything we do helps seniors age in the place they call home. Learn more and get involved.

KC Shepherd's Center...Keeping Older Adults Active and Engaged

Offered by seniors, for seniors, our unique peer-to-peer programs increase social engagement, and mental, physical and spiritual growth through volunteerism and lifelong learning, reduce food insecurity and provide peace of mind for older adults and those who love them.

KC Shepherd’s Center provides opportunities for older adults to contribute their intelligence, creativity, experience and skills in meaningful and purposeful ways.

ReWIRED – not ReTIRED.

KC Shepherd’s Center is dedicated to serving older adults across the greater Kansas City area, providing essential services, comfort and companionship. Everything we do is aimed at supporting older adults.

The Elbert Cole Lifetime Achievement Award

established in 2021 to help keep his dream and vision for older adults alive in the Kansas City area, recognizing a 70 over 70 alumni who leads as an example of meaningful and purposeful aging in service to others and dispels the myths of aging.

2024 Winner, Larry Moore

Larry Moore needs no introduction in Kansas City. In addition to all the community and media contributions Larry has made to Kansas City for fifty years, he has the gift, like Elbert Cole did, of making you feel like you are the most important person in the world to him when you’re with him. We are grateful for the legacy that Larry has with KC Shepherd’s Center, and so very excited that he is willing to continue to engage with us now in meaningful new ways.

2024 Winner, Sally Firestone

While Sally’s recent passing appears to leave us only with remnants of her earthly life, her legacy leaves us with a tapestry of service to our community. Sally was a committed and active member of Central United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. After the tragic Hyatt collapse, Dr. Cole, installed a ramp, well before the ADA required it, to make sure there were no barriers for Sally to continue to worship regularly. Betty Tracewell made sure that Sally got to church on Sundays, and provided loving care and friendship to Sally for 40 years.

The programs they operate to assist older adults are well-run, compassionate, and meet an important community need. The staff and leadership are top-notch with extraordinary dedication.
