Alleen Castellani VanBebber, 81
For 15 years after college, Alleen worked in a variety of journalism and teaching positions. She then attended law school and was in full-time legal practice until age 70; today she still maintains a part-time legal practice, representing several small cities and a number of pro bono clients. Since age 70, she has been involved in a wide variety of volunteer activities, including the Historical Society of the Federal Tenth Court (past chair), Literacy KC (former board member), Southwest Boulevard Family Health Care (former Advisory Council member), Johnson County League of Women Voters and Shawnee Mission Indian Museum. She currently serves as president of the State Line Service League and is certified as a Master Gardener. Alleen says, “I remain convinced that a community benefits when people are doing things that need to be done, regardless of the difficulty of the task. Service work that you might find interesting and fun is always available, no matter your age or abilities. Every job you do, no matter how small, can help keep the shared fabric of our lives clean and mended.”
