Dr. Gail James, age +70
Gail has been faculty and Dean at several community colleges across the country, and retired from the University of Kansas, as Director of, the Learning Achievement Center. Her nonprofit experience includes Synergy Services, Project Equality, and KC Shepherd’s Center. Gail is an advocate for women’s rights, both in the U.S. and abroad. She is a founding member of the Women’s Intercultural Network and has served on the boards of directors for the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus, the Women’s Foundation, Alliance Francaise, and the United National Association. Currently, she coordinates the Women’s Equality Coalition. She was recently inducted into the Women’s Political Hall of Fame. She has been active in the international Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, which she says “represents a pathway to addressing discriminatory practices at the municipal level. This, to me, was an immediate and direct approach to assuring equity, safety, and empowerment for women and girls in our own localities. The opportunity to meet with CEDAW advocates in Geneva led me to appreciate that human rights activism is vibrant across the world and that we have so much to learn from each other’s experiences.”
