John’s volunteer work has touched the lives of countless children, youth, and people dealing with hunger throughout the Northland. John helped start and now helps run a monthly food pantry at the church and works in the church's community garden to help provide food for the community. He serves on the board of the Gashland Community Methodist Church, also doing all the church’s maintenance work and lawn mowing as a volunteer. John is active in a variety of programs to serve children and youth, including helping build a youth baseball field at the church which is used by all the North Kansas City schools. He supports all the North Kansas City school events through providing cheerleading and band spaghetti dinners and a kick-off barbecue event. He is also his neighborhood’s family/community grandparent, evidenced by actions such as opening his garage to kids who are waiting in the rain for the school bus.
