Johnnie Montoya
Johnnie Montoya, 76
After a career with the railroad, Johnnie began volunteering at The Don Bosco Center in 2014 and has been involved with helping his fellow senior citizens ever since. He offers his talents to package Saturday meals for homebound clients, helps staff double count donations for meals, and volunteers for the monthly Harvesters food distribution. About six months ago, the Don Bosco Center was short-staffed one day and in trying to figure out how to get all of that day’s Meals on Wheels routes covered, they asked Johnnie if he would consider taking one of the routes just for the day. He agreed and has been doing the deliveries daily since then. He is great with the people he serves and lets the center staff know if anyone is in need of assistance with anything else. Other seniors have watched him helping and now ask how they can help as well. His nominator says, “He is an inspiration to others.”
