Mark McHenry
Mark McHenry, 73
Mark began his career with the City of Kansas City in 1974 as a trainee in the Parks and Recreation Department, where he spent the next 44 years of his career. He worked his way up through the ranks and was named Director of the KCMO Parks and Recreation Department in 2003, becoming only the seventh director in the department’s 125-year history. Under his leadership, bonds were passed to expand the Kansas City Zoo, then he worked with other organizations to help privatize the zoo, the National World War I Museum, and the Liberty Memorial. In 2012, he spearheaded a campaign for a ½-cent sales tax dedicated to park development, which passed overwhelmingly. He retired in 2018. He then received an appointment by the Governor to the Missouri Conservation Commission, where he currently serves as Chair. He was recently named to the Parks and Recreation Hall of Fame and serves or has served on the boards of more than 20 local organizations.
